Dr Jack Swanepoel

Jack, or ‘Dr Jack’ as he is professionally known, is a professional cartoonist, born and bred in the Lowveld.  Jack currently lives near Kiepersol, in Mpumalanga, with his wife and his rescue dog Selous.

Jack studied Graphic Design at the Pretoria Technikon (now University of Tshwane) after which he landed a job in the Art Department of the National Parks Board (now Sanparks). As a nature loving artist, he was in his element, but those happy days only lasted three years, until he was retrenched, at which point he took both coins of his retrenchment package and went freelance in 1992.

His first lucky break came from the late Deon du Plessis, editor at The Pretoria News at the time, who asked if Jack could fill the gap left by their recently deceased cartoonist “Marlene”. Thanks to Deon, and the exposure he got though the Pretoria News, other clients came knocking.  Over the years, these have been many and varied and have included – amongst others – Noseweek, Rapport, Farmer’s Weekly.

Jack is a keen birder, wild food forager and anything to do with History also grabs his attention.

Apart from being a professional cartoonist and part-time fine artist, Jack also draws ‘CAR-icatures’ of much loved personal vehicles or means of transport.  From adventure overlanders, to bakkies, kombis, aircraft and boats, Jack draws a memorable CAR-icature from photographs supplied by clients.  These make brilliant gifts, particularly for special occasions.  For information on commissioning one, please contact Jack directly.
